Metal Detectors in Parks - Guidelines

 

Use of metal detectors in City of Portland Parks allowed, subject to the following guides.  Please follow these guidelines to ensure that parks remain safe and welcoming for all park users.

 

  1. When operating a metal detector in any Park area, please do so in a safe, and considerate manner. All local, state, and federal laws including Parks rules must be followed.

  2. The park rule regarding vandalism is - City Code 20.12.060 "Vandalism, Possession of Flowers and Shrubs," and reads in part:

    • It is unlawful for any person to remove, destroy, break, injure, mutilate, or deface in any way any structure, monument, statue, vase, fountain, wall, fence, railing, vehicle, bench, tree, shrub, fern, flower, or other property in any park.  (A complete list of Park Rules can be found in City Code Chapter 20.)

  3. Cutting of vegetation, driving vehicles off designated roads or moving or tampering with any park equipment or fixture is prohibited.

  4. Probing into ground is limited to the use of an ice pick or screwdriver, with a maximum blade or shaft length of 6 inches, or a knife with blade under 3 inches.

  5. All turf, dirt, etc. must be left in the condition it was  originally, prior to probing.

  6. If items of value are found, they should be turned in to the District Maintenance Supervisor for the park where the item(s) was found. Call 823-Play, 823-1600, or Portland Police. After the waiting period prescribed by law, if the items have not been claimed by the owner, you may legally claim the item(s). (ADD LAW CITATION)

  7. If hypodermic needles, live ammunition, or other potentially dangerous or illegal items or substances are found, please do not touch them, but report it immediately to Parks Maintenance 832-1600, or the Police.

  8. Do not interfere with or disrupt other park users or activities. Respect others space and privacy.

  9. Please direct questions about permissible use of metal detector in parks to 823-PLAY.
